Why Us?

Together in Wirral.

The Wirral Malayalee Community (WMC) is a cultural organization established by Malayalee/Keralites residing in and around Wirral. Its inception dates back to 2021 when a significant influx of this community migrated to the UK in response to the government’s initiative to address staffing shortages within the National Health Service. Over the years, the community in Wirral has experienced substantial growth, reflected in the burgeoning membership of WMC.

Presently, WMC holds a prominent position among Malayalee associations in the UK, representing a collective dedicated to fostering and preserving ethnic cultural heritage. Furthermore, WMC has made notable strides in integration within the broader British community, a testament to its commitment to social cohesion and inclusivity.

The Wirral Peninsula (/ˈwɪrəl/), known locally as The Wirral, is a peninsula in North West England. The roughly rectangular peninsula is about 15 miles (24 km) long and 7 miles (11 km) wide, and is bounded by the Dee Estuary to the west, the Mersey Estuary to the east, and Liverpool Bay to the north.

Historically, the Wirral was wholly in Cheshire; in the Domesday Book, its border with the rest of the county was placed at “two arrow falls from Chester city walls”. However, since the Local Government Act 1972, only the southern third has been in Cheshire, with almost all the rest lying in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside. An area of salt marsh and reclaimed land adjoining the south-west of the peninsula lies in the Welsh county of Flintshire.

The last Onam Celebration by the Wirral Malayalee Community was a delightful and authentic cultural experience. From the vibrant decor to the traditional performances and the sumptuous Onam Sadya, it was a true celebration of Malayalee culture. I eagerly anticipate their next celebration.
